March Favorites

March usually means Green Eggs and Ham, Ireland, little leprechauns, frogs, and weather around here! We love to bring in everything green this time of year - it sure brightens things up as we hope for an early Spring. Here are some of the books we like to keep out for our March rotation.

A Year Full of Stories: This is a really fun one for all year round that we used as part of our morning time a few years ago. For the month of March there are five stories: Gelert the Hound (A Welsh Story), The Bird Wife (An Inuit story), The Blue Coat (A Jewish story), The Pot of Gold (An Irish story), and Tiddalik, the thirsty Frog (An Indigenous Australian story).

Dr. Seuss Favorites: Dr. Seuss will always be favorite around here. His birthday is March 2nd so we make sure to have green eggs and ham for breakfast and read some of the classics!

Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland: This is the probably the best historical book we like to read on Saint Patrick. This books tells some of the legends surrounding him and why he is associated with the shamrock and snakes!

Fiona’s Luck: This is a fun folktale - geared for a little older children - about leprechauns with beautiful illustrations.

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover: A favorite for every holiday around here if you haven’t figured that out yet, ha!

Shannon and The World’s Largest Leprechaun: This is another fun Irish tale with a great message about following what you really want and not letting self-doubt get in the way.

Flora and the Peacocks: I have this in our March rotation simply because it’s green. Peacocks have a special place in our family so it’s a favorite one around here.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring: It isn’t quite Spring, but where we live it definitely bounces back and forth between snow and rain and sunshine so it’s the perfect book for this time of year.

Rain Before Rainbows: I LOVE this book. Probably in my top favorites for picture books. I love the illustrations and the beautiful message of hope laced throughout it. We keep a copy of the address Grateful in Any Circumstances by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf tucked in the back of this book because it ties in so perfectly.

The Hidden Rainbow: Another favorite picture book with the cutest illustrations. This one is about a bee searching for the colors of the rainbow in the garden. This is a fun one to pair with the wooden rainbow.

I Like To Look for Rainbows: This is a visual to one of our church songs, I Like to Look for Rainbows, and we use it as a reminder of the promises we make at baptism.

The Rainbow Fish: A early elementary classic that is fun to bring into the rainbow theme this time of year.

How The World Works: Since March is such a fun time to talk about rain and rainbows, we love this big pop-up out picture of the water cycle in this book.

Little Kids First Big Book of Weather: Our favorite reference book for all things weather!

Wild World: Another fun green book! This one is filled with poetry for the different biomes around the world. Rainforest, arctic, prairie, woodland, ect.

Nature Anatomy: March is a fun time to learn about pond life and frogs. One year we ordered a tadpole and learned about the lifecycle of a frog. Our sweet little tadpole lived about a year but never turned into a frog, ha! It was still a lot of fun and something I’d recommend doing though.

I’ll leave you with a few pictures from year’s past! Let me know if you have any other favorites for this time of year!
